What is the MMR titer test?

In general, a titer test measures the level of antibodies against a specific disease in a blood sample. Antibodies are proteins built by our immune system against microorganisms that enter the body. Thus, the MMR titer test checks whether you are immune to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. In other words, the amount of IgG antibodies made by the immune system in the body is measured. Most people in the United States get the MMR vaccine. But the immunity to the vaccine does not last throughout a personโ€™s life; the MMR titer test helps determine whether the body is still resistant to the disease or needs to get another dose of the vaccine. This titer test can also be used to diagnose measles, mumps, or rubella.

Importance of MMR Titer Test

The MMR Titer Test helps you find the answers to these questions: Have you received the MMR vaccine? Is the immunity from the vaccine still present in your body? And do you have measles, mumps, or rubella?

What are Measles, Mumps, and Rubella

Rubella is a contagious infection known to cause red rashes. It gets called German Measles, too, which may cause no symptoms for some people. However, it may provoke serious problems, especially for unborn babies whose moms are infected.

Rubella is not identical to Measles, but both share the same symptoms. For instance: red rashes. Rubella is a mild disease. Once you have been infected, you are immune for the rest of your life. It may cause arthritis in women, especially in fingers, knees, and wrists, for about a month. It also can cause ear infection or brain inflammation.

Measles is a contagious virus located in the nose and throat of the victim. Therefore, when the patient coughs or sneezes, the virus spreads out in the air and infects other people. It may also locate on some surfaces with continuous use and infect others. Almost 90% of exposed people to a victim of Measles are infected.

The Mumps virus causes mumps disease. The symptoms include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle pain
  • Malaise
  • Headache
  • Fever

Contact with an infected person and through saliva and droplets are the transmission ways. The virus may even locate on most-used surfaces for several hours. So, one will be infected as they touch the surface and then touch their nose, mouth, or eyes. Mumps causes salivary glands below the ears as it makes the area swell.
