N95 Respirator Fit Testing

N95 Respirator Fit Testing is part of the Respiratory test. Health care providers must receive training and pass the test to ensure the N95 is working properly on their faces. It got regulated by OSHA. The test checks whether the mask fits well on employee’s faces. Since June 1, 2020, the annual N95 Respirator Fit Testing has become mandatory.


Why is N95 Respirator Fit Testing Necessary?

This fact makes N95 Respirator Fit Testing necessary. Although OSHA has regulated a test before starting to work, some changes could occur. Some factors make an N95 mask not working properly:

Who should Provide N95 Respirator Fit Testing?

It is Employers obligation to provide the test for the workforce.

They must offer employees with a good selection of models and sizes. Not everyone can use the same mask. When employees completed the test, they must use the same model and size.

Due to medical reasons, some employees may not be able to wear a respirator. Employers must make sure the employees suffer from no medical condition.

There are independent occupational centers that provide safe tests for workers. Employers could work with them.

How to Fit-Test an N-95 Respirator?

Notify the test subjects that they must refrain from eating, drinking (except water), chewing gum, or smoking for 15 minutes before doing the respirator test for proper fit.


Sensitivity Test

  1. Place a hood over the test subject who is not wearing a respirator.
  2. Move the hood assembly forward so there would be about six inches between both the face and the window.
  3. Tell the test subject to breathe through a mildly open mouth with their tongue extended.
  4. Inject 10 squeezes through the hole in the hood window with Nebulizer #1 and Sensitivity Test Solution #1.
  5. Investigate whether the subject can detect the sweetness or bitterness of the solution. If the taste is satisfactory, proceed to the next step.
  6. If you haven’t tasted it yet, inject another 10 squeezes and repeat with 10 more if necessary. Take note of how many squeezes (10, 20, or 30) are needed to produce a taste response.
  7. If 30 squeezes are insufficient, the test is terminated, and another type of fit test solution is required.
  8. Remove the hood and give the subject a few minutes to clear their palate.


Training on their Personal Respirator

  1. A written program that is site/task detailed is necessary.
  2. Instruction on respiratory dangers specific to each task
  3. Instructions on how to use and the limitations of each respirator for each task.
  4. Teach and demonstrate donning, doffing, and adaptation procedures in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
  5. Provide guidance on negative and positive user seal checks in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, and allow employees to practice techniques.
  6. Fit each employee who will be appointed a respirator.
  7. Train employees on how to maintain and store respirators that are being used.
  8. Filter/cartridge replacement: when particulate filters or pre-filters become dirty, broken, or hard to breathe through; or according to the given schedule; and/or “End of Service Life Indicator” for chemical filters/cartridges.
  9. Teach employees how to identify medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of respirators.
  10. Record the fulfillment of training and fit testing for all employees who may be required to wear respirators.


Fit Test

  1. Ask the test subject to put on the respirator and perform a user fit check per the guidelines issued.
  2. Ask the subject to put on and position the hood as before, breathing through the mouth.
  3. Apply 10 squirts of the fit test aerosol in Nebulizer #2 and Test Solution #2 (or the same number of squeezes as in the Sensitivity Test).
  4. The squeezes should be taken every 30 seconds (or half the number of squeezes…10 for 20, or 15 for 30 using the same method as the third step). For example, 10 squeezes to begin, then 5 squeezes every 30 seconds for the remaining 6 12 minute test duration.
  5. Following the initial aerosol injection, have the subject carry out the exercises for 60 seconds each (7-minute test) below:
    1. Regular breathing
    2. Deep inhalation
    3. Rotating the head from side to side (without moving shoulders)
    4. Up and down nodding of the head
    5. Speaking – for example, count backward from 60 to 1.
    6. Hunching over
    7. Normal respiration
  6. The test is canceled if the subject tastes the test agent. Keep track of whether the subject passed or failed the fit-test for that specific respirator. (Wait 15 minutes before re-testing to allow the taste to leave the subject’s mouth.)
